Description: Fundamentals of Supervision II continues the study of supervisory responsibility. Supervision II expands on the concepts of management and what the basic qualifications of a good supervisor or manager consist of. Specific topics include: Problem-solving & decision making, planning, time management, continuous improvement, health & safety, and employee selection & retention. Meet your Instructor: Richard (Dick) Hanson has been an instructor in the Workforce and Economic Development Division (WEDD) of Gateway Technical College for the past fifteen years, teaching supervisory management, quality, mathematics, and manufacturing –related classes at local organizations and Gateway campuses, as well as marketing Gateway programs to business and industry in the Gateway District. Prior to joining Gateway, Dick had twenty years experience managing a variety of business operations in companies ranging from Fortune 500 companies to family-owned businesses to his own company. Dick’s experience includes managing manufacturing operations at heavy equipment manufacturers, managing the quality function at a heavy equipment manufacturer, managing the sales force at a components manufacturer, and managing parts and service operations for both a heavy equipment manufacturer, and a distributor of turf equipment. He also served as a Sales Engineer for a components manufacturer. Dick has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and a Master of Business Administration degree.

Gateway Technical College Center for Bioscience & Information Technology (3520-30th Avenue, Kenosha)
Description: The Manufacturing Skills Standards Council – MSSC – has developed an industry-driven training and assessment program that addresses the core competencies of higher skilled, front-line material handling workers (entry-level to first line of supervision) across the supply chain: from factories, to warehouses, to distribution centers to transporters. Participants attend 20 hours of training for the foundational-level Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) certificate which includes global supply chain logistics life cycle, material handling equipment, safety principles, quality control, teamwork, mathematical reasoning, and adaptability to change. The training is followed by an assessment which leads to a national credential – MSSC Certified Logistics Associate (CLA). Classes will be held from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm March 4- April 1, 2010 at Gateway's Center for Bioscience & Information Technology. Excel I will be held on April 8 (required for course completion), and the CLA Assessment will be given on April 15 from 8:00 am - 10:00 am.

Time & Stress Management (Master's Certificate Elective)

Description: This Master's Certificate Elective course deals with identifying and eliminating time wasters, using a variety of tools to better plan and organize one's time, learning how to delegate effectively, as well as how to set aside time for one's personal life. Inefficient use of time can lead to stress problems, so this course will also provide tools to identify stressors and how to eliminate some of them. Additionally, the causes of stress and how they can affect one physically and mentally will also be examined. Meet Your Instructor: Larry Wilkins, Gateway Technical College.

Fundamentals of Supervision III (Spring 2010)

Description: Fundamentals of Supervision III completes the study of basic supervisory responsibility begun in fundamentals I and II. Supervision III covers six additional areas common to supervisors in large or small organizations. Topics are explored through conference-discussion instruction technique with full class participation. The course highlights an “in-basket” group project, which enables participants to apply most of the principles learned in earlier sessions.
