Area Employers Earn Spots in Top-10 Places for Working Mothers
Kenosha News Staff
Two major area employers are among the nation's "top-10" companies for working mothers.
Abbott Laboratories, the largest private employer of Kenosha County residents, and SC Johnson in Racine, were each named by Working Mother magazine as being in the top 10 in the magazine's annual list of the 100 best companies for working mothers.
SC Johnson was one of just three companies from last year's top 10 to return to the list. If was the company's 18th time making the top 100, and Abbott Laboratories' sixth consecutive year in the top 100.
Other companies with local ties that made the top-100 list include DaimlerChrysler, Motorola, and Allstate Insurance Co. The only other Wisconsin-based company to make the list was Mercy Health System in Janesville.
To form the list, Working Mother had companies fill out an application including more than 500 questions about compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and family-friendly programs.
The top companies had strong leave programs for parents and flexible schedules available for workers, as well as family-friendly programs, child-care programs, and a history of strong compensation and advancement of women on the corporate ladder.
"This wonderful recognition from Working Mother celebrates the special work culture that is SC Johnson," said Fisk Johnson, chairman and chief executive officer. "We work hard at creating a great, flexible work environment. By doing so, all of the people at SC Johnson, not just working parents, can focus on their family and the needs of business."
Miles White, Abbott's chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement, "Our goal is to have an environment where each employee can maximize their contributions and career."
